THE HANSA TRADERS STORY
I have spent 16 extraordinary years in St. Petersburg, Russia, where I have been involved in leadership development among Russian college students. I believe that effective development of leaders is based on biblical principles, such as honesty, hard work and love for God and one's neighbor. Over the years, I have had the privilege of seeing Russian students transformed by God's love, and I have spent countless hours around their kitchen tables enjoying the legendary Russian hospitality.
In addition, I have been blessed to spend many retreat weekends in Northern Russia's closest Baltic neighbor, Estonia. Since reading the tales of King Arthur in my childhood, all things medieval have intrigued me. The freedom to wander the winding, cobblestone streets of the capital city Tallinn has been like finding an unexpected treasure. At every turn, there is imagination and inspiration. I have fallen in love with Estonia's creativity and the originality of its galleries and artists. In 2002, I found myself wanting to spend more time with friends and family in the U.S. Many people had commented over the years that the gifts I brought them from Russia and Estonia were so unique that I might be able to sell them. The hand-painted sleigh bells were a hit from the moment my family saw them! I began by bringing them back in my suitcase, and over the years, the encouragement of my family led me to begin a small business, which would allow me to continue spending part of the year in Russia as well.
I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to help and influence my Russian friends through this business. I chose the name Hansa Traders to identify with the medieval heritage of the cities where most of my products originate. Tallinn, Novgorod and Tver all were towns on the old Hanseatic trading route of the Middle Ages, and they are major components of my "trading route" today! The Hanseatic League was an affiliation of merchants which grew into an alliance of cities and trading posts uniting western and eastern trade. I hope to unite east and west again today by bringing unique, handcrafted items from these fascinating places. Behind each item are a story, a face, and a lot of talent! I pray my business will be a blessing to many Russians and Estonians, and that you will be blessed by your experience of these artists' skill and originality. Brooke
